Year End Report

November 30, 2022

It has been a busy and productive year on the Tarkio College campus. We have experienced our largest enrollment with 35 students enrolling in six programs this fall. These include welding, plumbing, HVAC installation, wind energy technology, computer information technology, and a new program in health occupations which includes the Certified Nurse Assistant certification. In addition, we have five new registrations for second semester. The biggest news regarding enrollment has been the addition of Shenandoah High School as one of our concurrent enrollment partners. Their student population is larger than all three of our Atchison County schools together.

We have also been very busy with the campus restoration. We just completed the installation of a platform lift in Rankin, making the first two floors of the building handicap accessible for the first time in its history. We are continuing our campaign for replacement of the windows in Rankin and have sold all eight of the second-floor windows on the north and south end of the building and eight of the ten windows on the east side of the second floor. If you are interested in “buying” a window, contact us at info@tarkiotech.com.

The new windows have been installed in Jenison Hall as we prepare to make it a student residence hall. Installation of a new roof will begin this week. The total cost of the remodel is $275,000. This will give us campus housing and will allow us to begin restoration of the other dorms. Work has begun on the third floor of Thompson as we create additional classrooms and labs for our health science programs. This includes new HVAC for the floor. Midwest Data company has completed the donated computer lab and has installed our network system. The electricity has been run to the two-million-dollar Nacelle which was donated by Invenergy, Vestas, and Ameren wind companies. Finally, we are putting together numbers for restoration of the cafeteria and Eppley Lounge.

In April we were notified that we would be receiving just under $600,000 from the estate of Mary Joanne Curnutt. Many of you will remember Miss Curnutt’s brother, Dean. Dean served many years as the Atchison County Collector. Dean was an alumnus of Tarkio College and a lifetime supporter of the College and the youth of our area. In August we received a $116,700 grant from the Stanley Herzog Foundation to cover the cost of the development and the administration of the Christian Business Program. We have also received grants from the Atchison County Development Corporation and the Taylor Trust to help cover the costs of the handicap entrance and platform lift at Rankin.

On September 15, we announced the launch of a five-year, $3,000,000 “Heritage Campaign” designed to address needed repairs to the campus. Specifically, this first phase will target repair of all the roofs on campus except for Carothers and the south end of Slusher, restoration of the cafeteria and Eppley Lounge, remodel of Jenison for student residence, and opening the third floor of Thompson which includes repairing the elevator. These are all critical repairs that will contribute to the growth of the school and the restoration of the campus. We invite you to contribute in whatever way you can afford to the “Heritage Campaign.” We have included with this letter a pledge form, or you can go to tarkiocollege.com and click on the “Donate” button to fill out the pledge online. Under “Where would you like your donation to go?” select Heritage Campaign.

As always, we would love to have you visit us anytime you wish and allow me to give you a personal tour of the campus. We host many alums and former Tarkio residents throughout the year, and it is always exciting to hear of their memories of Tarkio and Tarkio College and to see the excitement they have for our future.

We hope that this is an especially memorable time for you and your family and that God’s blessings will be upon you throughout the coming year. All of us at Tarkio College wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

John Davis, President
