Evaluation & Completion Requirements

Certificate and Diploma

Students who complete all certificate or diploma program requirements, and who meet the specifications set forth in the Standards of Academic Progress, are eligible to receive either a certificate or diploma, depending on the program completed. Students will be recommended for the certificate or diploma by their instructor(s). The instructor will validate that all requirements have been met. Students are encouraged to participate in the awards ceremony. All certificates or diplomas will be mailed upon completion of the grade verification process after the end of the semester. Students, who have not met their financial obligations to the school, are still eligible to receive their certificates or diplomas upon successful completion of the programs. Official transcripts may be withheld until all financial obligations are met.

Grading Policy

The Registration/Records Office offers students an option to receive grade reports in one of three

manners at the end of each semester. These include mail, email, or the internet-based student

information system. Students will also receive regular feedback on class progress during the term of the

course.

Tarkio Technology Institute uses a letter grade to assess student success in a class and program.

Instructors may use points to assess assignments. These are translated to letters for the final class grade.

Class grades are translated to GPA (grade point average) to determine overall grade for a program

certificate or diploma.

Calculating Grade Point

Grade points are calculated on the following basis: for each hour of "A," four points; for each hour of “B,” three points; for each hour of "C," two points; for each hour of  “D,” one point; and for each hour of "F," zero points. A "WF" (withdrawal failing) grade is counted as an "F" and receives zero points. A grade point average is computed by dividing the grade points by the number of semester hours of academic work attempted. Grades assigned as "NC" (no credit), "W" (withdrawal), "I" (incomplete), are not computed in the grade point average.

Note: A grade of “C" or above is required in all courses to meet the requirements to earn a program Certificate or Diploma.

Standards of Academic Progress (SAP)

To maintain the required Standards of Academic Progress in a program or an individual course, students must meet the minimum requirement of having an average grade of “C" or better. Unless other arrangements are made, students should obtain a certificate within a maximum three years and a diploma within five years. Student academic progress is reviewed at the mid-term and the end of each semester. If a student is not making satisfactory progress at the mid-term and end of the semester, they will be counselled, and recommendations will be made to improve attendance or academic progress.

Failure to maintain a satisfactory standard of progress in a program may result in the following actions:

A. After one semester where the student has less than a “C” average or 2.0 GPA, a student may be placed on academic probation. Students may continue to attend classes while on probation. Students will remain on academic probation until their Tarkio Technology Institute GPA is at or above 2.00.

B. After two semesters where a student has less than a “C” average or 2.0 GPA, the student may be academically withdrawn (or dropped) from the program. Note: Students may re-enroll in individual course(s) for which prerequisites are met.

C. Students may be re-admitted to a program where students prove to the satisfaction of the school administration that circumstances have changed. By successfully completing individual courses, students can raise their GPA to 2.0 or better and show they can handle a school workload. At that point, they may apply for re-admission to a certificate or diploma program.

And/Or

A. Students may be academically withdrawn from a course at the recommendation of the instructor when students are failing after mid-term (and can’t catch up to get a passing grade by course end).

B. Attendance is important to learning in a practical trade or technology course. Students may be academically withdrawn from a course at the recommendation of the instructor when attendance impacts class assignments so that students are failing.

C. Students who are academically withdrawn from a course will receive a “WF” grade for the course.

By identifying students showing issues early, the school provides assistance for improvement and permits the student to withdraw before becoming obligated for 100% of tuition and fees.

The administration, in conjunction with Registration/Records, instructors and advisors, is responsible for administering and supervising the Standards of Academic Progress. The student is entitled to request a hearing regarding probation or a dismissal.

Tarkio Technology Institute will attempt to notify students by email when they have not maintained satisfactory academic progress. Students are responsible for being aware of the satisfactory academic progress policies and will remain responsible for monitoring their progress if the School's notification is not received.
